Hello, I am using Windows 7 Proffesional, and since about a month there is a 25 to 75% CPU load while doing nothing. The CPU load is set at boot and doesn't change when Windows is running.
The process causing this is 'System'. Using Process Explorer I discovered that there are 1 to 3 threads running in ntoskrnl.exe!KdPollBreakIn+0x1a0 which are causing this CPU load. The number of threads giving a high load never changes while the PC is running. I have all Windows Updates installed My hardware:. CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 (3.0GHz stock, over clocked to 3.4GHz).
Motherboard: Asus M3N-HT Deluxe. RAM: 4x 2GByte DDR2, 800MHz. GPU: nVidia GTX285 (latest drivers).

Removing the overclock doesn't fix this problem. The strangest thing is that I haven't seen any 75% (3 KdPollBreakIn threads) since I enabled the floppy controller in the BIOS.). Alright, it happened again. The Performance Analyzer isn't capable of displaying it because I haven't set the registry setting yet. But I have found the reason why this is happening.
It appears my BIOS battery is empty so the time is not correct. This on itself is not a problem, but Windows doesn't like it when you sync the time to an external server and you get a huge jump.
A jump of even a day (+/- a few minutes) is 'to large' and causes this behavior. If I set the clock just about right before resuming Windows from hibernate, everything goes just fine. This is the answer for me at the moment.
I'm going to set the registry setting and reboot my machine. I'll let you know if it happens again. Running into the similar issues as everyone else.

Computer starts fine, runs well for a short period of time (between 10 minutes to one hour) then the computer spike up to between 75% and 100% usage and will stay in that range until I restart the computer. This problem originally surfaced after I had done an upgrade from Vista (64 bit) to Windows 7 (64 bit), but I've now done two custom reinstalls and on the second one I was still having the problems even though I hadn't touched my backed up files or installed any programs. I'm using an HP system with an AMD Phenom Quad Core processor, 6 GB of RAM, an nVidia GeFored 9100 video card, and a dual monitor setup (.one DVI, one VGA).
Solutions I've attempted: UniBlue Registry Booster & DriverScanner, Shutting off all startup programs, Using Microsoft Security Essentials to scan for viruses. No permanent fix. I'm really close to just reinstalling Vista and demanding a refund from Microsoft that's how frustrating this is. Hi Andre, I've had the same problem for the last 2 weeks. I just recently upgraded (clean install) to windows 7 on my work laptop. I would be humming along doing my work and then one of the cores in my laptop (Lenovo T61) with Intel T7500 Core 2 Duo would go to 100% kernel time (red in process explorer) and never come down. Everything else would go sluggish including my virtualization window that I use for work.
Process explorer identified the culprit as KdPollBreakIn in ntoskrnl.exe. Of course I couldn't get any other info about it from there and a reboot seemed the only resolution. So, I searched for KdPollBreakIn and came to this thread. I have done as you suggested and run xperf. It was a bit technical, but I got through the tutorial.
Even without the full stack trace I was able to identify btwavedt.sys as the culprit. A quick internet search showed that this is the Bluetooth driver. I had only one BT device connected to my computer - my cell phone. I disconnected and deleted the pairing.
My CPU went back down immediately. Many thanks for the xperf info. All, if you are frustrated by this problem, use xperf and get to the root of it! Thanks again Andre!
Like its sister flaw, Meltdown, Spectre exploits how computer processors handle a task called “speculative execution” to gain access to sensitive data stored in your operating system’s protected kernel. But while Meltdown could be resolved by operating system patches, Spectre is harder to smack down, requiring individual software vendors to update potentially vulnerable applications.

Nvidia discovered its GPU display driver software can fall prey to the Spectre CPU exploit—unsurprising, given how deeply graphics card software digs into your operating system kernel—and is pushing these updates to strengthen against it. To be clear, Nvidia graphics hardware is not vulnerable to Meltdown or Spectre.
This is a software patch to help protect against exploits against CPUs from Intel, AMD, and ARM. These new drivers include initial mitigations against one of two known Spectre variants, CVE-2017-5753. As far as the second Spectre flaw, “Nvidia’s initial analysis indicates that the Nvidia GPU Display Driver is potentially affected by this variant,” the company says. “Nvidia expects to work together with its ecosystem partners on future updates for this variant.” Consumer graphics cards aren’t the only hardware being patched to fight Spectre.
